How to stay healthy — even when the water quality is bad
Don’t you hate it when you develop a sore, scratchy, inflamed throat that you likely got from dirty ocean water?
Or how about dealing with a weird skin rash…
Or red, sore, irritated eyes…
Or a debilitating earache…
Or just coming down with flu-like symptoms…
And you suspect those maladies are directly related to the bacteria and viruses in the water.
That’s why hubby David has put together his speciality Post-Surf Survival Kit — with an unusual twist!
The reason for the Post-Surf Survival Kit is to neutralize and sanitize the eyes, ears, skin and throat from the bacteria, viruses and other nasties in the ocean water (no, not talking about aggro surfers — the only remedy I know for that is to spread the YFS stoke!).
Post-Surf Survival Kit + Directions for Use
(Note: we are not sponsored by any of these products mentioned below — they are just our favorites. Would love to hear about your favorites, too, in a comment at the end of this post.)
STEP 1: Rinse your whole body (and face) well and get out of your wetsuit, trunks or bathing suit. We used to bring a portable shower like in the image below. It’s really easy because you leave it on the roof of your car while you’re surfing, and the sun warms it up for you! Otherwise, rinse well if there’s a shower at the beach, or do as we do and keep a gallon of water in the car to pour down your wetsuit, and be sure to remove whatever you wore in the water!
Bacteria and fungus thrive in a moist environment, so dry off well and change into clean fresh clothes as soon as possible after getting out of the water.
STEP 2: Hydrate your eyes with lubricating drops. After my own retina surgery and subsequent cataract removal, I started using Retaine eye drops, which are the only ones that don’t sting my eyes. Flush your eyes a bit right after getting out of the water by using up one vial for both eyes. Then close your eyes for at least 30 seconds to allow the drops to absorb.
STEP 3: Clean your nasal passages with Simply Saline or similar treatment. This all-natural Simply Saline product has been a lifesaver for both me and David, as it cleans out any bacteria or viruses we might have picked up in the water. Can’t remember the last time we had any sinus issues or even mild stuffy nose. Works great for us!
STEP 4: Treat your ears with an over-the-counter swimmer’s ear product or a few drops of hydrogen peroxide. Note: If you are under a doctor’s care, be sure to run all these ideas by your doctor first to make sure nothing is contraindicated for you personally.
STEP 5: Disinfect your throat with David’s surprising treatment. Here’s that special little twist I was talking about: gargle with vodka! Yep — David keeps some pure vodka in a glass jar with a screw-top lid. Note: I tried this myself but it was too harsh! Maybe you can do 50/50 water and vodka. Now, the idea is to swish it around a bit and spit it out — not drink it!
STEP 6: Hydrate your face with my own all-natural, organic Youth Serum. Not yet part of my Youth Serum cult following?
