How to Strengthen Ankles and Feet for Surfing

Did I tell you about the time I broke my foot?

(It was the 5th metatarsal, for those of you who are nodding your head right now in sympathy and understanding!)

This happened a few years ago, when I caught the edge of my shoe on uneven pavement while walking my dog Teddy.

Now here's where it gets weird...

Just prior to that break, I happened to see a few people wearing a cast on their foot, using one of those little scooters to rest their knee and leg.

And Lord forgive me, but I was thinking, "Wow! Can't people be more careful?! How can all these people I know suddenly have broken their foot?"

And I also thought using that little scooter to scoot around on was so...so... LAME.

Well -- guess who was scooting around on a little scooter as well?!

YEP! I had my own little scooter, and a huge boot, and doctor's orders to stay off that foot for at least 8 weeks.

Sadly, it was at least 12 weeks until I could put weight on that foot.

Did you do the math? That was 3 months off without setting foot on my surfboard.

(Luckily I could still swim, but had to drag my foot behind me, because even the slightest bit of kicking caused pain in my foot.)

So... what does that have to do with this week's YFS FRIDAY video?

Well, interestingly, one request I get a lot is for tips to strengthen the feet and ankles for better surfing!

When you think about it, our ankles support 90% of our body weight -- and our feet support 100% of our body weight!

No wonder it's so easy to twist, sprain or break your ankle.... or foot, or toe.

And when your feet are out of commission, your surfboard is out of commission as well.

I do count myself lucky that I've gone through life with very few injuries -- and I do tip my hat to yoga for keeping me strong and healthy.

Who knows? I might have broken that foot (and other joints) much earlier on if I hadn't been doing YOGA for SURFERS.

My hope and #goals for you is that you continue to "surf better longer" -- even as the years go by, keeping your body strong and healthy.
