Best 5 Before You Ride


I came up with the idea for YOGA for SURFERS© after experiencing a dramatic change in my surfing due to practicing yoga.

I had been suffering from years of shoulder tendinitis and I was scheduled for surgery. Then, a life-altering experience occurred when I attended my first-ever yoga class (this was back in the late 1990’s) and not only did my shoulder heal, but my entire life would change from that point on.

My mission became to spread the word of yoga to my fellow surfers, here in the US and around the world, through the first-of-its-kind surf-specific yoga series.

So many surfing buddies used to complain about having a stiff back, tight shoulders and bum knees…. and these aches and pains and injuries were ruining their surfing abilities.

I felt like shouting, “Eureka!” when I realized how amazing yoga could be in terms of creating suppleness and strength for more fluid, powerful surfing.

After discovering yoga, the very first thing I changed about my own surf routine was to no longer just hit the waves as soon as I hit the beach…

But instead to take a few minutes to warm up my body and breath and prepare my brain for the surf session to come.

Oh, I had seen surfers doing vigorous calisthenics on the beach, but it seemed to me they were using up their energy before paddling out — and that was NOT what I wanted to do at all!

Instead, I came up with a fluid, flowing, feel-good sequence of poses to warm and stretch the major muscles used in surfing.
