Have you ever thought about how important balance is for your surfing — and your life?
If you've ever had a foot or leg injury, or have had a vision challenge (like I'm currently experiencing) then you know how critical it is to maintain your ability to balance.
When it comes to surfing, think about how a misplaced foot or too much weight to the rail makes for a rocky ride. Poor balance leads to wipeouts.
I get so many questions from surfers asking “What are the best balance exercises for surfing?” and “Can yoga improve balance?”
The best balance poses for surfing are those that mimic the changing conditions of the ocean.
That’s what I had in mind when I created the YFS video series. Each video contains a variety of fun, challenging, unique and effective yoga poses for balance that helps with surfing!
Now, the good news is that you can improve your balance for surfing with yoga pretty quickly -- and get immediate feedback as you do so.
Balance poses are some of my favorite exercises because I can gauge how my body, brain and breath are responding.
But, how do you improve your balance on your surfboard?
A great way to practice balance poses for surfing is to do so on dry land.
Some people love to use the Indo Board for balance training. I’ve practiced with the Indo Board myself — and it is quite a challenge! I make sure I have a wall nearby to catch myself if needed.
But you can also work on improving your balance without an Indo Board — and even without a yoga mat!
Top 3 Tips to Improve your Balance for Surfing
1. Don’t try to be a stone statue.
We are alive — and where there is breath, there is movement. So don’t be worried about wobbling and wavering when you practice your balance exercises!
Just “surf the pose” instead and go with the flow.
2. Breathe naturally and consciously.
Most people hold their breath when exerting effort (whether that’s executing a balance pose — or paddling out into the lineup).
In the videos on this page, you’ll hear me explain exactly how the breath affects not only your balance — but all areas of your life.
You also learn about additional resources you can invest in to help you develop better breathing and lung capacity, which is so crucial on the waves!
3. Focus and relax.
Okay, those are two tips in one, but they really go hand-in-hand. Focus your gaze on a spot out in front of you, and let that be your anchor point or safety net, as I call it.
Then, relax into your breath and into your body so the energy can flow freely instead of being locked up.
